Trendsetting - Two Jordanian Designers

A truly unique and exciting event introduces established ceramic artist Rula Atalla’s first jewellery collection and Samar Habayeb’s debut furniture collection.

Rula Atalla creates unique necklaces, bracelets, pendants and earrings using semi-precious stones, delicate fabrics, vintage cameo brooches and silver, among other materials, to produce a dazzling array of trendy jewellery.

Her long-time aspiration to make a social impact has involved her in the “Ruwwad” project, a non-profit undertaking that assists the underprivileged community of Jabal al-Nathif.

The result is a beautiful collection of framed landscapes that she creates using clay shapes crafted by teenagers with disabilities. The proceeds from the sale of these landscapes go back to “Ruwwad” and into the community.

In addition, Rula has produced eco-friendly Christmas trees made from pruned branches and decorated with discarded fabric and other items that she crafts into tree ornaments.

Samar Habayeb combines traditional Arabic calligraphy with contemporary colour and design to create unique and innovative tables and chairs that are slick and modern, yet steeped in the Arab tradition. Using fiberglass, metal, ceramic and resin, she sets Islamic motifs against modern materials and concepts, blending functionality and aesthetics.

Samar’s work is a challenge to the conventions of furniture design, reviving and engaging classical elements, while breathing new life, passion, and imagination into them.
