Dead to Red Race

The hare brained idea of the Amman Road Runners (ARR), this run started in the early nineties by a bunch of running enthusiasts. Throughout the years, ARR have created a number of events the most popular of which today is the Dead Sea Ultra Marathon (DSUM); a road race from Amman to the Dead Sea, the lowest point on earth. The DSUM is today the official marathon of Jordan and features five categories: 49 Km, full marathon, half marathon, 10 Km and 4 Km fun run. The D2R is a relay event suitable for amateurs and athletes of all ages and genders without restriction. The very first Dead2Red event saw the participation of two teams of 6 runners each. Since then, the event has steadily grown in popularity and today there at least twenty teams participating with a maximum of 10 runners per team. In 2007 we expanded the event to include cycling teams and in 2008 8 biking teams of maximum 5 cyclists participated. To date, the youngest participant was a girl of 8 and the oldest was a man of 60+ Over the years the D2R has become more of a race than a fun run. With the high rate of repeat participation, a sense of competition now permeates this run thus adding a new flavor to the event and heightening the adrenaline charge for participants. So far in 2008, the fastest team has completed the course in just over 16 hours. Since inception, the route is unchanged. The run starts from Wadi Moujeb Bridge on the shores of the Dead Sea at an altitude of -415m below sea level. From there teams make their way through the Wadi Araba to an altitude of +120m above sea level before descending towards the shores of the Gulf of Aqaba 242 Km away at sea level. The D2R offers no monetary awards at all. The purpose of this event is to go out and challenge yourself, enjoy the scenery and most of all have fun. Sponsors support this event by providing T-shirts, medals and nominal trophies for several categories as well as dinner to celebrate the end of the event and to recognize all participants and support staff such as the Civil Defense, Military, Police, Sponsors, volunteers, and of course the Media.
