A Footnote in Ballet History

Hisham Abdel Khalek, 118 min, Documentary, Arabic and English with Arabic subtitles, France/ United States, 2016

The creation of a classical ballet troupe in Egypt under the auspices of the State during the Cold War lies at the heart of an extraordinary saga told in this film by its principal pioneers.

Star dancer Magda Saleh and her troupe remember half a century of history; dating back to the foundation of the first national ballet school with Russian teachers, its first triumphs, its decline and finally its current renewal.

“A Footnote in Ballet History” has received a number of awards including: 3rd Best Documentary at 25th FESPACO 2017 Pan African Film Festival of Ouagadougou - Burkina Faso, Best Script at 5th Tiharqa International Award for cinema and Art – Sudan and the Special Award at 2nd Sunlight International Film Festival – Russia. The film took part in numerous festivals in Cairo, New York, Dhaka, Alexandria, and Khartoum.
