Waad Al-Kateab and Edward Watts, 96 min, Documentary, Arabic with English subtitles, UK, 2019

“For Sama” tells the astonishing story of 26-year old female Syrian filmmaker, Waad al-Kateab, who filmed her life in rebel-held Aleppo through five years of the Syrian uprising. She fell in love, got married and had a daughter all while filming the violence raging around her and in particular documenting the challenges the conflict imposed on women and children. Along with a close group of friends, she stayed in the city to fight for her dream of a free Syria, a struggle that ended in their defeat and exile.

Waad is a symbol for our times, the epitome of a bold, brave woman prepared to risk her life for what she believes, in a year when women are finally becoming the heroes of their own stories. Her story is an epic tale of the survival of love and courage amid the cruelty of war.

“For Sama” has been shortlisted for the Best Documentary Feature Award at the 92nd Oscars Academy Awards. The film has won the BAFTA Award for Best Documentary, the British Independent Film Award for British Independent Film and the European Film Award for Best Documentary.

In a gray northern city of France, a coterie of women — the persistent if somewhat naïve Audrey, the no-nonsense Manu, the sweet and soon-to-be single Helene, and the trash-talking Angelique — runs a day shelter for homeless females, offering them a warm shower, a hot meal, a little camaraderie and some necessary career guidance.

When municipal officials decide that the shelter isn’t helping enough people get off the streets and back to work, they shut it down, leaving Audrey and Manu to deal with the consequences. The two soon decide to keep it open clandestinely, allowing their girls to stay there overnight while training them in the day to become confident and functioning members of society.

Preconceptions fall when we are allowed to see beyond appearances. Subway characters have various life stories. A hidden priest, a newly-released prisoner, a nurse, a young pregnant, three students, a couple of elders, a couple of parents saddened by the disappearance of their son, three lame guys, a dancer and two Moldovans. What is going on when we discover the stories of those we spend time with day after day?

She flees to Holland, where conductor Mengelberg tells her to see Karl Muck, who gets her accepted into the Berlin State Academy. Her debut is a success but the resulting forces her to return to the US, where the bias against women musicians inspires her to start a female orchestra.

Charo is convinced that the only way to pay off the debts is to sell the place.

Meanwhile, Angela learns that her husband has disappeared in mysterious circumstances. Given this painful reality, Angela resolves to get on and rebuild her life. And the first thing she decides to do is put her savings into getting the old place and its seven tables back up on its feet.

In the northern part of Norway, Tobias and many other children work as cod tongue cutters. The tongues are considered a delicacy, and they are exported around the world to countries like China and Japan. However, in Northern Norway, they are simply everyday food when in season.

The children start from the age of six and can earn a lot of money during a winter season. This job has always been reserved for the children, as long as the fishing industry has existed. They even have their own cod tongue cutting championship every February. This winter, city girl – Ylva - from Oslo will spend her winter vacation up in the North. Usually, she lives far away from cod heads, sharp knives, fish blood, and intestines, but this winter she will visit her grandparents to try and learn the art of cutting tongues, just like her mother and her grandfather did before her.

The film chooses to recount the human and political events of Naples at the end of the 18th century by illustrating the precious hours preceding Eleonora’s death. The camera is set at the centre of her soul, to record the suffering, hopes and passions of her entire life. Thus, the portrait of a courageous woman, modern and free, is created through the threads of memory.

A funny and moving film about teenagers with growing pains, who discover their own voices and talents through riding and making hobby horses. Playing with hobbyhorses is traditionally a child’s play, but today’s teenagers have brought the scene to a new level. Hobbyhorse Revolution follows Aisku, Elsa, Alisa and their friends for two and a half years. As the girls grow, the hobby evolves and expands to become a phenomenon for thousands of people in Finland.

The film has won the Jussi Award for Best Documentary.
